Disgustingly Tasty (Asquerosamente rico) is a cooking program for children currently broadcasted by Señal Colombia. It participated in previous editions of the Bogota Audiovisual Market and has now been nominated for the International Emmy Kids Awards, the largest global platform for recognizing excellence in children’s programming.
Content from 16 countries was chosen by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the gala to be held on April 10 in Cannes, France. In the Kids: Factual category, Disgustingly Tasty shares the nomination with programs from Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
Mirta and Marta, a rat and a cockroach, accompany a chef who prepares recipes with ingredients that children consider disgusting and make them into disgustingly tasty dishes. These three characters—one live action chef and two animated creatures—combine cooking, comedy, and history to get broccoli, onions, and asparagus off the list of undesirables and transform the eating habits of families through television and the internet.
The series was created by Maritza Sánchez and Carlos Millán of Echando Globos, a company specializing in creating and producing audiovisual content that builds culture, provides education, and promotes development. The initial project spent six years “cooking”, traveling to international events before it got produced. The road was long because the show was deemed too transgressive and unconventional by the adults who make decisions at the channels. However, the program is now a success with children, entering its fourth season in co-production with Señal Colombia. Episodes have also been broadcasted in Ecuador and Peru.
One of the stages on the tour to make Disgustingly Tasty a reality was the Bogota Audiovisual Market, the platform created by the Bogota Chamber of Commerce and Proimágenes Colombia for the Colombian audiovisual sector, supported by the National Television Authority (ANTV). "The BAM gave us experience that we later took to other international markets, such as Mipcom and Kidscreen, and festivals such as Comkids and Prix Jeunesse. The mechanics of the BAM are a perfect training ground for these other world markets. At the BAM, we were also able to continue negotiations that we had already begun in other international arenas," says Millán.
This project was also awarded a grant from the ANTV and the Ministry of Culture for the production of children's television. After coming to fruition, it was recognized as the best entertainment program by the India Catalina Awards in 2017 and has received other awards and nominations nationally and internationally. Its next stop is the illustrious International Emmy Kids Awards event, attended every year by representatives of the world's leading production houses and distributors of children's content
